What to Expect from the Mid-Atlantic Hearing & Balance Center Program When I'm A Cochlear Implant Candidate

Step 1:  Schedule an appoint with Dr. Lassen via web registration or call Lakeview Medical Center, 483-7186 (Churchland Office) or 934-9415 (Suffolk Office)

Step 2:  Appointment with Dr. Lassen in his office at Lakeview

Step 3:  Hearing & Balance Assessment w/ Audiologist at Lakeview

Testing may include one or more of the following:

  • VNG (Videonystagmogram)

  • ENG (Electronystagmogram)

  • ABR (Auditory Brainstem Response)

  • Sport Kat

Step 4:  Diagnostic Testing—Dr. Lassen will most likely send you to the Health Center
at Harbour View or to Lakeview Medical Center for a CT

Step 5:  Follow-up appointment with Dr. Lassen to review test results

Step 6:  Surgery is scheduled (patient will be contacted with the surgery date)

  • Your surgery will be at either the Bon Secours Health Center at Harbour View or Lakeview Medical Center

Step 7:  Pre-op requirements

  • You will meet with the Anesthesiologist for an evaluation (location based on where you will be having your surgery)

Step 8:  Outpatient Surgery

  • Implantable hearing device surgeries do not require a hospital operating room or overnight stay; unless there are extenuating circumstances, you will be discharged on the same day as you have your surgery

Step 9:  Post-op Requirements

  • Follow-up Appointment with Dr. Lassen (series of visits)
  • Follow-Up with Audiologist for orientation & activation of your implantable hearing device (series of visits)
    • Initial activation occurs 4 to 5 weeks after surgery.  Upon activation, the patient is required to return for a series of follow-up and mapping visits with the audiologist.

Step 10:  Support Group sessions organized by the Program Coordinator will be
available for you and your family members

Step 11:  Additional information regarding assistance with community resources will
be available for you through the program coordinator
